Accessing the Trail

1. Collect your receiver

You will need a Secret Bunker/North receiver to listen to the hidden sound. Receivers are compatible with most headphones.

Members of Newcastle Libraries can borrow receivers and guides at the following local libraries:

Blakelaw Library, Binswood Avenue, NE5 3PN
Kenton Library, Hillsview Avenue, NE3 3QJ

 

2. Getting There

Blakelaw Park is ten minutes north of Newcastle city centre just off Ponteland Road/ A167.

Bus Routes:
The X87 bus service travels from the city centre to Blakelaw Park in just over 10 minutes.

Car Parking:
Blakelaw Park is off Cragston Avenue, Blakelaw, NE5 3TS.
Parking for Blakelaw Filter Room Bunker site is off Sunnyway, Blakelaw, NE5 3RS.

The Bunkers are now in residential areas. Please respect the local residents and do not park in these streets.

Accessibility:
All sites have a hard level surface around the listening bases. The majority of locations are adjacent to existing surfaced footpaths & have level access. Location 2 & 5 have level access but across grass & Location 4 is up a small hill.

 

3. Activating the sound

Once you are at your desired listening location:

  • Find the Secret Bunker North symbols carved in the black oak benches & plinths.
  • Place the receiver in the recessed symbol to start the playback.
  • Additional receivers can be placed nearby to join in the listening.
  • Lifting the receiver from the symbol will stop and restart the voices.
     

Whilst the locations are numbered the content can be listened to in any order and visitors can listen to as much or as little as they like.
